404 Not Found

n.

Pronunciation

/fɔr oʊ fɔr nɑt faʊnd/

Acronym

Definition

An HTTP response status code used when the URL requested leads to an unfounded site.

404 not found could be displayed if the URL is typed incorrectly or when a link is broken. It could also occur when a user attempts to reach a site that is no longer in use either manually or via bookmark. When a company is rebranded or renamed, the best practice is the company establishes a 301 redirect to the functional page. If this is not established, ‘404 not found’ will display for the user and they will not be able to reach their desired destination, resulting in lost visitor traffic and product views.
