Attribute Metadata

n.

Pronunciation

/ˈætrəˌbjut ˈmɛt.əˌdeɪ.tə/

Definition

The data about an attribute that determines how it operates.

In the same way an attribute further describes the items classified to a category, the attribute metadata describes the nature of the attribute itself. Typically, the attribute metadata will assign a data type, establish whether the attribute may capture multiple values, establish attribute dependencies, determine how the attribute will be displayed, and assign a unit of measure, if necessary. For example, an attribute <Charge Capacity> might have a number data type, not capture multiple values, be dependent on another attribute <Operation> capturing a “Battery” value, be displayed only on a product detail page, and have “hours” as a unit of measure. Other metadata besides those listed may also be encountered.
