Definition

The act of copying data or files from one machine to another, usually from a larger source such as a server to a smaller location such as a local computer. The download is also the information that is copied.

An example would be taking an online image and saving it to a smartphone. This is the opposite of upload, in which a file is copied from a smaller, downstream source to a larger online .
