Fractions

n.

Pronunciation

/ˈfrækʃənz/

Acronym

Definition

A method of displaying fractions used in Word and on many websites in which the numbers and forward slash between them are replaced with a single character.

Commonly used fractions like 1/2 or 3/4 all have their own single symbol which can be substituted for the 3 or more characters involved in typing the full number. This symbol has the numbers in a smaller font than the surrounding text, resulting in a neater and more intuitive look. However, there is a danger that less commonly used fractions will not have a corresponding symbol and will display as the separate characters, ruining the uniformity of the formatting.
