Inheritance

n., v.

Pronunciation

/ɪnˈhɛrətəns/

Acronym

Definition

1. A type of attribute metadata specifying whether an attribute can be managed at a higher level of the hierarchy and passed down to the child categories without having to be managed at the child categories.
2. The act of passing down attributes from a higher level of the hierarchy to the child categories.

The benefit of attribute inheritance is to limit the amount of places an attribute needs to be managed. Not all PIM systems can support attribute inheritance, thus it will not be a part of all attribute metadata. Attributes should only be inherited when they apply to all SKUs in a product family the same way. If different product types use an attribute in different ways inheritance will not help.
