Definition

The act of combining disparate items into a consolidated system.

Integration can be on a small scale where various databases are combined, or a large scale where various systems of an enterprise are mapped into a single model that relates the systems to one another. This allows information in each system to be easily understood, accessed, and manipulated, preventing instances where data is unusable to other systems within the enterprise. Professional system integrators can be hired to do this within an organization, Integration is a major goal of an effective Master Data Management system.
