Meta Tag

Meta Elements

n.

Pronunciation

/ˈmitə tæg/

Acronym

Definition

A short text description located in the HTML header for each page of a website.

Meta Tags are a form of metadata which search engines can leverage for SEO. They are not visible on the page itself unless the page source is viewed. Common Meta Tags include the Title Tag, which becomes the writing on the browser’s tab, and the Meta Description Attribute, which is a short description of the page’s contents that may show up in the search results. A tag called Meta Keywords Attribute is for words and short phrases describing the contents of the page, but this kind of Meta Tag is no longer used for SEO purposes. Meta tags can also tell search engines whether to cache data or how often to index the page.
