Pronunciation

/ˈpraɪˌmɛri ˈpɛrənt/

Definition

The true parent of a category that is cross-listed under more than one parent in a polyhierarchy.

A primary parent establishes the official hierarchical path for a cross-listed category within the back-end of an information system. The primary parent is typically captured by the unique identifier of the parent category. For example, an [Electrical Tape] category may be listed as a child category of both [Electrical] and [Tapes] with the former category serving as the primary parent.
