n.
Pronunciation
/ˈprɑdəkt ˈdeɪtə ˈmænəʤmənt/
Acronym
PDM
Definition
A system that houses and contextualizes data that facilitates the development and manufacturing of products.
While a Product Information Management (PIM) system gathers all details necessary to manage an existing product and market it, PDM systems support the manufacture of different products. These systems contain information that an end user has no need to know, such as bills for the materials used to manufacture the product, supplier contracts, specification for each part, and CAD/CAM drawings. PDM systems also contain information on different versions of the same product. Like PIM systems, PDM systems can help to classify and visualize products.
