A sequence of characters used to creates a search pattern, commonly used in "find" or "find and replace" operations.
Regular expressions are used in search engines and text editors and supported by most programming languages. There are two types of characters in a regular expression: characters that represent themselves and metacharacters. Combined, character and metacharacters can search for patterns such as different permutations of the same word using a regular expression like "Labou?r" or every time there are multiple spaces after a period, or ever intergern that is a multiple of 5.
