Select Box
n.
Pronunciation
/səˈlɛkt bɑks/
Acronym
Definition
An option on web forms where instead of typing in an answer, the user is able to choose a value from a set list.
Having a restricted list of values for the user to choose from helps to maintain uniform data and improve data quality. A select box that allows the user to choose a state will prevent four different users from typing such disparate answers as "IL," "Ill.," "Illinois," and "America" as an answer to the same question. However, a select box which does not have an option for a common answer may lead to user frustration and unreliable information.
