User Segmentation

/ˈjuzər ˌsɛgmənˈteɪʃən/

The practice of segmenting users into various groups to provide a more tailored user experience.

User segmentation occurs when a website or eCommerce shop somehow identifies its users (either by surveys, purchase history, browser activity, etc.) and groups them, offering each group a different user experience. For example, an online clothing store may be able to determine if a user is male or female and know to provide a different shopping experience for either group. User segmentation is useful in dynamically marketing products to different users on a single website.
