v.

Pronunciation

/ˌdɛpɹɪˈkeɪʃən/

Acronym

Definition

The process of features, terms, or practices in an entity losing value due to new preferences in data governance.

Deprecation can apply to many fields. In software a feature could be deprecated due to any number of reasons, including a more efficient feature gaining prominence or plans of future restructuring making the old version unsafe or inoperable. In schema a term may become deprecated based on a desire for increased consistency and standardization. The end goal of deprecation is to discourage old usage until the new use is widespread.
