A persistent character string used to uniquely identify digital objects and is standardized by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

Digital object examples include articles, publications, reports, data sets, videos and other types of information sources. The character string identifier of the object does not change, but associated metadata such as location may change. Applications of DOIs include government, academic and professional uses.
