Multi-purpose Hierarchy

n.

Pronunciation

/ˈmʌlti-ˈpɜrpəs ˈhaɪəˌrɑrki/

Acronym

Definition

A product hierarchy that is designed to capture the product relationships in multiple ways which are used differently by varied groups.

Often times product hierarchies need to be designed differently because they have different uses depending on who is accessing it. Instead of designing multiple hierarchies for these separate uses a multipurpose hierarchy combines these multiple relationships into a single hierarchy tree. The multi-purpose hierarchy will typically include more cross lists or duplicate nodes than a single purpose hierarchy.
