These human-created or curated rules can be used to sort through information, fill values, and analyze data sets more efficiently on a bigger scale. The rules base of such a system contains practical knowledge on how to manage and analyze the data specific to the system. Depending on the software, the knowledge base might be built in, as in the case of a medical software that helps make a diagnosis, or the user may be able to change it, as in the case of PIM system with autofill functionalities an analyst can use as they gain familiarity with the categories. If the rules are constructed automatically or involve machine learning, this is seen as separate to classical Rule-Based Systems.
