Service-oriented Architecture

n.

Pronunciation

/ˈsɜrvəs-ˈɔriˌɛntəd ˈɑrkəˌtɛkʧər /

Acronym

SOA

Definition

A type of software structure which integrates distinct functional units into a single application.

Service-oriented Architecture (SOA) depends on the use of individual services in conjunction with one another. Services are separate pieces of functional software. Service-oriented architecture manages and integrates these components using an enterprise service bus (ESB). Examples of services could be a map application or an online payment system. Service-oriented architecture could incorporate these services into a single website. Service-oriented architecture is flexible and prevents remaking existing services.
