Pronunciation

A system in which products are organized into premade hierarchies designed for specific industries.

Standard Classification Systems were made specifically for certain product groups or industries, such as the Classification of Products by Activity or the Electro-Technical Information Model. If applied to a specific company they will not be as well-fitted as a custom taxonomy, but they are generally applicable as they contain decisions made with industry-specific knowledge. Since different types of businesses have different needs, many Standard Classification Systems exist. However, two systems, Global Product Classification and eClass, have jumped ahead as the most popular and many other systems are in the process of merging. Some PIM systems include some Standard Classification Systems off the shelf or can have them imported.
