Standard Units
n.
Pronunciation
/ˈstændərd ˈjunəts/
Acronym
Definition
A conventionally agreed upon way of quantifying a physical property used for measurement.
Common standard units of measure include millimeters and kilometers for length, gram and pound for weight, Fahrenheit and Celsius for temperature. All PIM systems support Standard Unit types. However, there can be ambiguities with Standard Units such as the term "pound" being used for both weight and currency. In addition, it's important to pay attention to which standard unit to use when there are two competing systems, such as Imperial and Metric. Having a built-in conversion functionality built into a PIM system is helpful when switching between different Standard Units.
